Gestures in Acting: Pankaj Tripathi's one neck movement to one eye blink
Updated: Dec 21, 2020
Pankaj Tripathi's one neck movement to one eye blink speaks a lot.
People often confuse gestures to amplify the emotion but not every one knows how a gesture can make an act more real and subtle. A gesture on screen may make or break an act. What one may perform on stage would appear to be exaggerated when seen on screen, the whole body movement is restrained in a frame defined in a storyboard. Does that mean that creativity is defied with onscreen acting? Certainly not.
In theatre a stage is a three walled room or totally open to the audience where vulnerability of distancing is at it's peak but everything takes place in real time, then what about cinema? A film being run on screen in reel time, this is where the actor has to stay true the emotions and staying the same has to play subtle to the screen.
Acting is an industry where everyone is giving their hundred percent as Vicky Kaushal says, we're living in a competitive world. What makes an actor standout is what sets her/him different. Does that mean one has to pretend to be someone they're not, definitely not. It is about extending your personality to the character and showcase it as raw and impeccable.
Pankaj Tripathi brings certain subtility to Kaleen Bhaiya's character in Mirzapur that his neck movements speak more than his dialogues. This does not mean that one can play subtly with their gestures irrespective of any regards to the character.
Kaleen Bhaiya has been shown as the most dominant character, a person who is worshiped by the people. What reflects his societal dominance and a high social character is that his use of words which obviously are defined in a script but as an actor to compliment his societal character he takes his own time to reply and command and usually his nod says a lot and reflects his dominance.
The neck movements are his very own improvisations and a result of his year long training and practice that he has devoted to his craft. Well, let's just admire Kaleen Bhaiya for his phenomenal neck movements that sets him apart from the whole cast.
